Bank of Nova Scotia's (BNS-T 60.87 -0.26 -0.43%) profit rose 13 percent in the first quarter driven by strong performances in its international operations and its acquisition of ING Direct Canada.

Scotiabank made $1.63-billion, or 1.25 a share in the quarter. That compared with a profit of $1.44 billion, or 1.20 a share during the same quarter last year.
